Self Build Case Study: Meet the star of the BIG Green Home Show

Lower Field Farm is a striking self build project and the cover star of our campaign for The 2017 BIG Green Home Show – a modern farmhouse built upon an elevated hillside in rural Lancashire. The dramatic design of the building incorporates local and traditional materials, helping it blend with the rural landscape and gives a nod to the previous derelict farm buildings which were once on the site.

Local architect, Peter Bamber, was commissioned to design a modern, energy efficient family home which reflected the existence of the previous buildings.

The unique design composed of three distinct elements takes inspiration from the original farm cottage and its stone-clad and open barns. The glazed link connecting the barn and farmhouse allows light to flood in, and is reminiscent of the old open barn.

Such an unusual design, plus the client brief for sustainability was potentially problematic. The solution, however, was a 'fabric first' approach, specifying solid construction with Wallform ICF for the external walls, and solid concrete floors.

Sustainability was a key feature of the specification. High levels of energy efficiency in the building fabric were complemented by ground source heating and a heat recovery system to maintain a comfortable feel to the home. A borehole water supply also helped to further reduce both the environmental footprint and running costs of the home.

The end result speaks for itself and is a wonderful example of modern energy efficient construction.

BecoWallform will be giving a detailed presentation on the build during The BIG Green Home Show.
