Carpenter Oak – Luke Copley
What My Company Does
Carpenter Oak specialise in the design, making and raising of timber framed buildings. Since 1987, we've completed thousands of projects, from small domestic extensions and remodelling, to new builds and large commercial and public buildings. We have also been involved in the conservation of some of the world's most historic buildings, from Windsor Castle to the Scott and Shackleton huts in Antarctica. We pride ourselves on doing all of this, properly, using hand tools and long-established timber framing methods, our carpenters see every project through from start to finish, raising our frames across the UK and overseas.
What will I be doing at the October Show
We have been extremely busy in the last six months, building a new website and going through a re-brand process that reflects our merger with Carpenter Oak and Wooodland and the future of the business. Many visitors at the October show will see a very different offering from us and freshly printed brochures and case studies. We are really looking forward to seeing how the general public and potential clients react to our new branding and literature. We have also built a new educational stand that will demonstrate the principles of timber framing and how other elements of the build process can be incorporated into a timber frame structure.
Why should people visit the Show?
It's a great venue to see permanent structures (like our oak framed show stand) up close, compared to other venues that are put up and broken down over a few days. We always encourage visitors to bring along any drawings, sketches, and photographs if they have a site. This gives us and the other exhibitors a much better understanding of their project and how they want their building to look and function. The NSBRC gives people a huge range of different companies who, like us, are all selling different materials and build options, but there is also a huge amount of useful information and advice on offer to really help and educate people on every stage of the process, from ground works to finishes.
A few Interesting Facts about my company:
• We have started the process of becoming employee owned; inspired by, among others, the NSBRC.
• We restored the oak framed roof of Windsor Castle after the fire in 1992.
• We operate from yards in Cornwall, Devon, Wiltshire and Scotland.
• We have built various siege weapons such as ballistas and trebuchets that have featured in several television and film reconstructions.
• In 2016 we won our third consecutive Build It Award for Best Oak Frame.
• The Wolfson Tree Management Centre, featuring our Douglas fir frame won four RIBA awards in 2017.
