MH Selfbuild – Mike Hardwick
What My Company Does
I’m essentially a one-man consultancy business specialising in helping aspiring self builders to set off on the right foot. I have several strings to my bow: I’m currently acting as General Manager for the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA), the voice of the Custom and Self Build Industry, I’m Build It magazine’s Self Build Expert, so I write articles for them every month as well as appearing at their shows and, of course, I’m proud to have been closely linked with the NSBRC since the day it opened back in 2007. I contribute to their shows and until recently, presented their self build and project management courses.
What will I be doing at the October Show
At the show, I’ll be presenting potted summaries of the self build course over 3 sessions throughout the day. I’ll also be chairing some panel sessions, probably on building systems or perhaps a general ‘Question Time’ session where the audience can ask anything they want regarding self building. The bits in between will be spent fielding all sorts of questions from visitors and I shall do my best to give the right answer! No two shows are the same, and there will always be a mix of the more common questions around how much a project costs to some obscure teasers that can be a challenge to answer.
Why should people visit the Show?
The NSBRC have been putting on shows for the last 10 years or so and they just keep getting better. It’s the only permanent space like it in the country and If you book in advance, you’ll get free access to a plethora of experts including architects, project managers and material suppliers as well as support from around 250 exhibitors. Everyone at the show wants you to make the best of your project, so you will find everyone willing to help make your self build journey a manageable and enjoyable experience by offering sensible and useful advice wherever they can.
A few Interesting Facts about my company
Mike Hardwick Self Build Ltd evolved out of the practical experience of building my own home. I’m a former RAF Officer and built my home while I was still serving. Many of my colleagues were fascinated by what I was doing and several admitted that they’d always wanted to build their own homes, too. As a result, I spent so much time propping up the Officers’ Mess bar telling people how to do it, that my own project evolved into a fully-fledged consultancy business!
