nSBRC - Self Build and Renovation

Help for Self-Build and Renovation Projects

Eco-friendly homes are fast becoming the preferred choice for both homebuilders and homebuyers alike. Improving the energy efficiency and green credentials of your home is a smart investment that can not only save you money in the long term but also helps to create a healthier and happier indoor environment. Advances in technology and a wealth of information readily available mean it’s now easier than ever before for home builders to be more eco-friendly.

At The Big Green Home Show, our eco-consultants will be on hand all day to help guide you in the right direction and answer any burning questions you may have about creating a greener home. From advice on environmentally responsible building principals to the most cost effective eco-materials for your project, we can help you to make the best and most informed decision for your needs. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of free one-to-one sessions with our team of experienced professionals, who will be happy to take a look at your photos, plans or blueprints and offer a valuable second opinion.

You can meet some of the UK’s leading experts, all offering free professional advice in our ‘Professional Services Hub’ and ‘Ask An Expert Zone’.  Here are five of our key accredited organisations who will be attending the Big Green Home Show:

Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
Employing someone to design or remodel and build your most valuable asset is likely to be a nerve racking experience. Unless your project is very simple it makes sense to at least talk to an architect for advice before you get going.

Architects are highly skilled and professionally trained to turn your aspirations into reality. They will guide you through the design, planning and construction process whether you are constructing a new building or adapting an existing property.

The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT)
CIAT is the lead qualifying body for Architectural Technology and represents those practising and studying within the discipline.  Chartered Architectural Technologists specialise in the application of building science and technology to architectural and construction projects. They are recognised as having specialist skills enabling them to manage the design process and use their technical knowledge and expertise to provide innovative solutions.

Federation of Master Builders (FMB)
When it comes to building quality, you deserve better. That's why for over 75 years, the not-for-profit Federation of Master Builders has championed continuous improvement in building standards.

Local Authority Building Control (LABC)
Whereas planning permission is about how a building looks, building regulations make sure your home is structurally safe.  Getting building work approved by your local council’s building control team helps ensure that the work is safe and up to building regulations standards as well as protecting you against rogue builders. So seek their advice before starting any building project.

VAT Refunds
The creation of a dwelling by new construction or by conversion normally entitles a self builder to reclaim VAT paid on the purchase of materials, once the project is complete. The amount refunded depends on how the project has been managed and can amount to many thousands of pounds. Early advice from a specialist may be invaluable.

There will be a packed schedule of seminars running throughout the weekend, providing visitors with detailed information on all aspects of self-build and renovation. Whether you’re looking for information on planning permission, project management or eco-friendly building, our seminars have it covered. They are the perfect opportunity to quickly gain valuable knowledge in these areas or ideal as a refresher for those who already have experience.

Live demo areas will give visitors the opportunity to see products and materials in action, helping you to make an informed decision on the best options for your project.

If you’re planning a large-scale build or renovation, this is a show not to be missed. Book your free tickets now and let our friendly experts help you achieve the home of your dreams.
