National Custom and Self Build Week supported by the NSBRC to Spark Creativity and Education in the Self-Build Sector
We are pleased to support ‘National Custom and Self Build Week’ from the 6-12 May.
National Custom & Self Build Week has the simple objective of getting more people to think about Self or Custom Building – starting by joining the 40,000* people already signed up to their local ‘Right to Build’ registers.
The week is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the different routes to home ownership, such as Custom Building, different construction options and where to go for help and advice.
A new self-build focused TV show, Grand Designs – The Street, is airing on Channel 4 (every Thursday evening over six weeks) ending in National Custom & Self Build Week. It follows Self Builders on a single street at the UK’s largest Self Build site – Graven Hill – which is just an hour’s drive from the NSBRC.
Custom and Self build delivers better homes that people aspire to live in and that communities are happier to see built, than traditional ‘bulk build’ projects. As the most recent Government housing white paper states “Custom build homes are generally built more quickly and to a higher quality than other homes.” (source: Government report: Fixing our Broken Housing Market)
Harvey Fremlin, NSBRC’s MD, says: “The UK builds far fewer Custom and Self Build homes than many other developed countries. This week will highlight the potential of this approach to not only deliver better designed, more energy efficient homes, that people are delighted to live in, but also help tackle our housing crisis.
“We are already seeing visitors arriving at the NSBRC, having been inspired by the Graven Hill residents currently being featured on Grand Designs and people are beginning to realise that there is another way of buying a home. We’re here to help them understand the choices available and what options are most suited to their family requirements, life-style and budget”.
The Right to Build
Key to the message is to create greater awareness that people in England have the ‘Right to Build’, as set out by legislation announced in 2015 and updated in 2016. This requires all councils to maintain a register of individuals and groups of individuals who want to build their own home.
It places a duty on them to grant sufficient development permissions for serviced building plots to meet demand on a rolling three-year basis.
We’d encourage you to visit the Right to Build Portal. (https://righttobuildportal.org ) This is a free campaign page that links people to their local registers, which is crucial to support councils as they work to provision sufficient plots for building.
