5 top tips for affordable Passivhaus Retrofits

In collaboration with the Passivhaus Trust.

Next steps for those inspired by Guy Martin’s House Without Bills

For those inspired by the Passivhaus retrofit featured in Guy Martin's House Without Bills, which aired on Channel 4, the Passivhaus Trust is offering a wide range of resources to help homeowners and construction professionals take the next steps.

The programme followed the nine-month renovation of a semi-detached house in Stretford, with the aim of reducing heating demand to an absolute minimum. The result was a full transformation to Passivhaus retrofit standards, with Guy Martin involved in each stage of the build.

Whatever your budget, the Passivhaus Trust provides access to the technical knowledge needed to deliver a successful retrofit - alongside practical guidance on keeping costs under control and projects manageable. At the NSBRC, we are pleased to host the popular Passivhaus Workshop in partnership with the Trust, with the next session taking place at the Centre on Friday 24th April (10:00 - 16:00). The workshop brings together a range of exhibitors who are also members of the Passivhaus Trust, offering a full day of seminars, guided tours, and 1:2:1 consultation sessions - designed to help attendees move from inspiration to practical action.

A key message from the Trust is that Passivhaus retrofits don’t have to be delivered all at once. Instead, they can be approached incrementally - carefully staged alongside planned home improvements. By taking a step-by-step approach, homeowners can spread costs over time while still working towards a high-performance end result.

The Trust also highlights alternative routes to certification, helping to make Passivhaus principles more accessible and achievable for a wider range of projects.

The Passivhaus Trust's top 5 tips for affordable Passivhaus retrofits include:

  1. Work with an experienced Passivhaus Designer/ Consultant and independent Certifier
  2. Get the retrofit modelled in PHPP (Passivhaus Planning Package)
  3. Develop a whole-house plan for the retrofit, even if all the measures can’t be undertaken at once
  4. Consider a component-based route, which offers greater flexibility in achieving Passivhaus retrofit certification.
  5. Use a step-by-step approach, with the retrofit implemented in stages, alongside other home improvements.

"Passivhaus retrofit delivers wide-ranging health, comfort and energy saving benefits, and the security of a gold standard quality assurance process. The new stepped approach to Passivhaus retrofit will provide a series of affordable steps to deliver Passivhaus levels of performance and peace of mind."

Jon Bootland, Chief Executive of the Passivhaus Trust

Exciting changes are happening at the centre! To make way for new exhibits, some of the old ones need to be taken down, which means building work will be taking place. This work will continue on weekdays throughout March, but we’ll still be open for visits as usual.
