Building Systems Workshop

One of the most important decisions you will make during your self build journey is which building system to use.  The building system is the method used to construct the superstructure of the house.

This is aimed at people at the early stages of a project, who have yet to decide what building method they are using.

Workshop highlights include:

  • ‘Battle of the building systems’ Panel discussions
  • Exhibitor Presentations with the opportunity to ask our experts questions
  • Tours of the ‘Wall Zone’ in our new build educational area
  • A selection of exhibitors offering '1:2:1' appointments

We will cover key issues such as:

  • The different building systems available in the UK
  • Pros & cons of each option
  • Performance factors – Air tightness and energy efficiency
  • Cost implications
  • Time on site required
  • Impact on gaining finance and planning consent
  • Site access implications

Using our own unique educational zones, and working with a selection of NSBRC exhibiting partners, we’ll explore each of the main options, including: Timber Frame – Masonry – Insulated Concrete Formwork – Steel Frame – Passivhaus – Structural Insulated Panels – Log homes – Straw bale

My husband and I attended the 2-day "Building Systems Workshop" at the National Self-Build & Renovating Centre. Before the workshop, we thought that we knew most of the answers as to the building systems (SIPS, ICF, timber frame, thin joint etc), financing and planning permission strategies that we would use. After the workshop we had completely different and much better strategies!! This is a good thing!! Many of the delegates didn't attend the finance and planning permission sessions. This is a great shame as these are critical topics and both sessions provided very valuable information. We can thoroughly recommend this 2-day workshop.
