NSBRC Spring Newsletter

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter.

With the clocks going forward in a few weeks’ time, and the first seasonal flowers emerging, spring always sparks a sense of optimism. But this year in particular, it does feel like we are emerging into a brighter, more hopeful period, with the gradual re-opening of the country and continued roll-out of the Covid vaccination programme.

During the previous two months our team have called and spoken to almost 4,000 self builders and home improvers and we have been delighted to hear about so many projects that have continued to progress. Almost two-thirds of people were continuing their builds, with a further 19% having recently completed their projects. We have also seen over 2,100 attendees join us in various online workshops and courses since the turn of the year. Over the next few months we have a huge range of events open to you, both online, and most excitingly, live at the centre.

We are planning to re-open our doors on Monday 12th April* and invite you to join us on that day. We will then be open, Tuesday to Sunday, as normal – and with all the Covid-secure measures we had in place last year, to ensure you enjoy a safe and relaxed visit. If you’d like to meet some of our exhibitors in person, look out for our special ‘Ask An Expert’ open day on Saturday 1st May – we’ll have more information on who will be attending soon.

Online, or at the NSBRC, we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

*Re-opening subject to the latest ‘road-map’ advice. Visits must be booked in advance via nsbrc.co.uk. Please check our website for updates before travelling.

CarbonLite Retrofit: Why go beyond Building Regs?

The Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB)'s CarbonLite retrofit standard creates a measurable pathway to make existing homes more comfortable, healthy and efficient.

We sat down for a chat with the AECB's Tim Martel in the Retrofit Zone, to explore how CarbonLite works and what it means to use a 'Performance Based Standard' like this to plan and track your project.

Next steps for those inspired by Guy Martin’s House Without Bills

For those inspired by the Passivhaus retrofit featured in Guy Martin's House Without Bills, which aired on Channel 4, the Passivhaus Trust is offering a wide range of resources to help homeowners and construction professionals take the next steps.

The programme followed the nine-month renovation of a semi-detached house in Stretford, with the aim of reducing heating demand to an absolute minimum. The result was a full transformation to Passivhaus retrofit standards, with Guy Martin involved in each stage of the build.
