Celebrating Employee Ownership

NSBRC team together on their Employee Ownership 'Team Day'

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre has been owned by our employees since 2014.

To celebrate national Employee Ownership Day on Friday June 25th, we enjoyed a day of team building at South Cerney Outdoor the following Monday.

The day started with an insight into South Cerney Outdoors own Employee Ownership journey from their Managing Director, Matt. After a quick re-cap on our own company’s objectives, we all signed our brand new 5 year business plan to show our understanding, connection and commitment to achieving our future goals.

We then kicked off the fun by jumping straight into paddle boarding on the lake, a new experience for most of us. Nerves soon gave way to excitement as we tried to master the different techniques shown to us. Many falls into the (surprisingly warm) lake ensued. Some of us many more times than others (We’re looking at you Gareth!)

Attempting to get as many of us onto a giant paddleboard as we could, led to us all unceremoniously falling in, much to everyone’s enjoyment. We managed to all exit the lake relatively unscathed, apart from the tragic loss of a pink nail and a few dented egos.

A quick break for lunch to recharge our batteries and we were off again. An afternoon treasure hunt put our knowledge and observation skills to the test. With the company split into two teams, we worked our way round the lake finding objects and solving riddles. Next, we used our physical strength, coordination and communication skills to compete in a race to the middle of the lake and back again, collecting our team’s flag from the island half way through.

The competition resulted in a draw, with a point to each team. Although this could be disputed, depending on which team you ask! With the weather still on our side we finished off our team building experience with a bbq and a chance to reflect and share our highs and lows of a brilliant day.

Seize the Moment: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Self Build Your Dream Home

We received this blog from longstanding exhibitor, Fleming Homes and found the piece inspiring, and wanted to share this with you. We hope this offers encouragement as you embark on your homebuilding project.

"Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect." Alan Cohen*

Alan Cohen's quote captures a powerful truth that’s particularly relevant to self-building. When the housing market feels uncertain, when interest rates continue to feel elevated in comparison with the record lows of 2020-2021, or when material prices fluctuate, it’s tempting to put the brakes on our plans - to hold off until things calm down.
