NSBRC Joins Northcot Brick to Mark 100 Years of Traditional Brickmaking

In 2027 the NSBRC will celebrate twenty years of serving the self build community, and (knowing Team NSBRC) we will no doubt be celebrating that milestone. But, we have been blown away by our exhibiting partner Northcot Brick, who this month, are marking a centenary of traditional brickmaking!

A trusted name since 1925, and known for their rich colours, character and craftsmanship, Northcot Brick continues to be the choice for stunning self-builds and heritage projects alike.

Our managing director, Harvey Fremlin and business development manager, Phil Wilson, were invited to the celebrations – by joining Northcot Brick at their fabulous ‘open day’ event.

After meeting a number of familiar and new faces, and sampling some tasty freshly-made pizzas, it was time to don their hard hats and hi-vis vests, for the highlight of the day, a walking tour of the brick works. Clay from the neighbouring quarry was sorted, refined and transported through a maze of conveyor belts and machinery, before being compressed (to remove any air pockets) and cut into bricks, before being sent to dry, ahead of the final kiln stage. The combination of traditional old machinery and modern robotics was quite a sight. It was also fascinating to watch employees making handmade bricks just as they did, one hundred years ago. Tasked with making a thousand bricks a day, and with the heat of the furnace, this was an impressive feat!

Harvey & Phil were then treated to a match of laser clay pigeon shooting over the original quarry (which we’re told Harvey won!) and left the site with a goody bag of local beers. Quite the day!

Harvey gave us his thoughts:

We were both left with a new found appreciation of the skill and dedication required to make high quality bricks, and it was interesting to see how they were able to recycle heat around the building, working as efficiently as possible, while adhering to traditional methods and materials. We both pass on our sincere thanks to the team at Northcot for such an enjoyable and informative day

CarbonLite Retrofit: Why go beyond Building Regs?

The Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB)'s CarbonLite retrofit standard creates a measurable pathway to make existing homes more comfortable, healthy and efficient.

We sat down for a chat with the AECB's Tim Martel in the Retrofit Zone, to explore how CarbonLite works and what it means to use a 'Performance Based Standard' like this to plan and track your project.

Next steps for those inspired by Guy Martin’s House Without Bills

For those inspired by the Passivhaus retrofit featured in Guy Martin's House Without Bills, which aired on Channel 4, the Passivhaus Trust is offering a wide range of resources to help homeowners and construction professionals take the next steps.

The programme followed the nine-month renovation of a semi-detached house in Stretford, with the aim of reducing heating demand to an absolute minimum. The result was a full transformation to Passivhaus retrofit standards, with Guy Martin involved in each stage of the build.
