Following two knee operations, Giles found he could no longer run the way he once had. Rather than stepping away from endurance sport altogether, he looked for a new challenge that would allow him to continue competing. Aquabike, which combines the swim and cycle disciplines of triathlon, proved to be the perfect fit, enabling him to build on his strengths while reducing the impact on his knees.
Balancing work, family life and training takes real commitment. Throughout his journey, Giles has been supported by his wife, Amanda Russell, Accounts & HR Manager at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC). The employee-owned organisation has proudly sponsored Giles as he continues to compete at an international level, recognising the dedication and determination he brings to the sport.
Giles never fails to inspire us with, not only his energy and commitment, but also the incredible results he achieves. To travel the world, representing your country in such gruelling sports takes real dedication and we are delighted to support Giles. It’s a thrill to see the NSBRC logo in different world locations - even if it is just a blur as Giles speeds towards the finish line!

His next challenge is the Aquabike European Championship in Banyoles, Spain, on Sunday, 19 July, where he will line up against some of Europe's best age-group athletes. Looking further ahead, Giles has also qualified for the Aquabike World Championship in Hamburg in September 2027 - a special return to a city where he previously completed an Ironman.
Giles' story is one of resilience and determination. Instead of allowing injury to end his endurance racing career, he adapted, embraced a new discipline and continued pursuing ambitious goals. With the support of Amanda and everyone at the NSBRC, he is proving that setbacks do not have to define an athlete. Sometimes they simply lead to a different start line - and an exciting new chapter.
